Matotornin ideana on:
- Ruokkia "puutarhan pikku puutarhureita" - myös kylminä vuodenaikoina. Näin maaperän laatu paranee ympäri vuoden. (Teen tätä Bulgariassa). - Pitää jyrsijät poissa. - Valmistaa istutettaville kasveille ja puille mahdollisimman hyvät lähtökohdat. - Vähentää yhdyskuntajätteiden jätekuormaa. |
The idea of the worm tower is:
- Feed the "little gardeners in the garden" - even in the cold seasons. This improves the quality of the soil all year round. (I do this in Bulgaria). - Keep rodents away. - Prepare the best possible starting point for the plants and trees to grow. - Reduces household waste load. |
Matotorni on muoviputki, jonka alaosaan olen poranut reikiä.
Siksi suljin tornin muoviastialla. Tiili sen päällä toimii painona. Luonnollisesti tämä vaikeuttaa maatuvan materiaalin hapen saamista. Laitan keväällä toisen kannen ja siihen ison reiän, jonka peitän hyttysverkolla. Toisaalta, toteutettuna kuten kuvassa, ei kylmä ilma pääse talvella suoraan torniin. Mikroobit muodostavat lämpöä aivan kuten lantakasassa, joten maan alla käy varmaan kuhina myös kylmempinä aikoina. Kuvassa oleva matotorni on nimenomaan minun keittiöjätteille. Muut tornit ovat istutettavien puiden maaperän parannusta varten. Siitä enemmän tässä hieman alempana. |
The worm tower is a plastic tube, the lower part of it has drilled holes. I put into the tower all the organic waste that is generated in my kitchen, dried bread, or otherwise spoiled food. Thus rats and mice do not have access to the waste. That would be the case if I put this waste on the compost heap.
I noticed that if the tower is not properly closed, flies and other insects lay eggs in the trash. That’s why I closed the tower with a plastic container. The brick on it acts as a weight. Naturally, this makes it difficult for the decomposing material to obtain oxygen. On the other hand, in winter, cold air does not reach the tower directly. In the spring, I make a new lid with a big hole, which I cover with mosquito net. Microbes generate heat just like in a compost heap, so there is probably a hustle and bustle going on underground even in colder times. The worm tower in the picture is specifically for my kitchen waste. Other towers are for the improvement of the soil for the trees to be planted. |
Mistä madot pitävät?
What do worms like to eat?
What do worms like to eat?
Tavallisilla madoilla on kyllä yllin kyllin muuta ruokaa. |
If you look at the bottom row of the picture, you’ll notice that worms don’t like chili, peels of citrus fruits, onions, bread, meat, and dairy products.
However, I put these in the tower that serves as my ‘household waste tower’. This is because I know that these, too, break down mainly by microbes and various microscopic small worms that eat dead microbes. And then comes other organisms eating them and everything breaks down in the end. Ordinary worms do also have plenty of other food. |
Puiden istutuksen esivalmistelu
Preparation of planting trees
Preparation of planting trees
I decided to make three worm towers in places where I will be planting trees next spring or fall. The length of the pipes was more than a meter. My friend Ljuben drilled 8 mm holes in the lower end of the pipe.
The pipes should have been longer, perhaps 1.6 m, because due to the trees to be planted, they were to be dug deeper into the ground than usual. The idea is to prepare as loose and nutrient-rich soil as possible for the trees to be planted. We dug relatively wide pits: about 60-70 cm in diameter and about 60 cm deep. We filled the pit several times with water to get the surrounding soil as moist as possible. We installed the pipe in the middle of the pit and put alternating topsoil and straw around the pipe in a 'sandwich' manner. We irrigated the environment of the pipes abundantly. The purpose of the straw is on the one hand to serve as food for microorganisms and on the other hand to maintain suitable moisture. When the straw decomposes, the straw makes the ground fluffy and well aired. We would also have put manure around the pipe, but it wasn’t on hand just then. |
We filled the tubes with plant parts and also added crushed eggshells, old eggs, straw as well as tree leaves. The leaves of the trees contain minerals that may not be present in the topsoil. Trees bring minerals from much deeper.
The roots of plants and shrubs may not reach that deep. Therefore, you should rake the wasteland of the yard and take the leaves to the garden for decomposing. We added a layer of about 20 to 30 cm of straw around the pipes. Partly because the soil will not dry out so easy, partly for the winter, so that the decomposing process can continue during the winter. |
An informative video:
There is much information in this video underneath and in text before the comment section are lots of links.
From the video above you will get this valuable information about carbon and nitrogen:
Kuvassa alla, vasemmalla:
Lähimpänä oleva torni sijoittui penkkiin, jossa olen jo pari vuotta kasvattanut perunaa. Keskimmäinen torni on penkissä, jossa olen kasvattanut kurkkuja tänä kesänä. |
Picture, below left:
The closest tower was placed in a bench, in which I have grown potatoes for two years. The middle tower is in a bench, where I have grown cucumbers this summer. The last tower was located in a place where I have never grown anything. And this is also reflected in the speed at which the chopped tomato stems and leaves in the tower decompose and shrink. I put the same stuff in every tower and packed it relatively tight. Each tower was filled to the brim. The result after 10 days was quite astonishing. |

When we plant a tree, we remove the straw around the pipe. We lift the pipe from the ground and put the tree to grow in the resulting hole.
Once this is done, we water the soil as needed and put plenty of straw around the tree seedling. The straws control any weeds and effectively prevent water evaporation. From time to time I check the soil moisture under the straws simply by pushing my index finger into the soil. |

“We found that vermicompost brought about average increases of 26% in commercial yield, 13% in total biomass, 78% in shoot biomass, and 57% in root biomass. The positive effect of vermicompost on plant growth reached a maximum when vermicompost represented 30 to 50% of the soil volume.”
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13593-019-0579-x An indoor worm composter can convert food scraps into worm castings in 4-6 months. If temperatures stay in optimum range (15-25 °C), it is fair to expect the same with an outdoor worm composter. The temperature for the worms should not be less than +4 °C. The best ingredients in worm compost are: - cow manure, pig manure - Sawdust, chips - vegetables; legumes, cucumbers and daisy-style plants - also brown (without multicolor printing) cardboard Of course, if you make a worm tower, then you can put everything there. Personally, I also push thistles and other unwanted weeds there. It does not matter how much seed enters the tube to a depth of 60 cm. |
Tämäkin video kannattaa katsoa (eng. kielinen)
Huom. 26 tuumaa = 66 cm

Kohopenkit puutarhassani - Raised beds in my garden
First I dug up the topsoil under the bales and also from where I was going to grow something. Then I put the straw bales in place and also put a worm tower (next picture) and different wooden material into the bed.
|
I covered the wooden material with a layer of topsoil and compacted it with plenty of water. After that I added some topsoil and some compost.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/822159814504666/user/100028396622069 I continued like this until all the holes in the worm tower were under the soil. This happened in the spring, so there was plenty of water in the well. Here is Miriam Alba Romano's excellent thread of the benefits of the worm tower in a raised bed (in English):
https://www.facebook.com/groups/822159814504666/user/100028396622069 |
Tämän jälkeen peitin mullan paksulla olkikerroksella. Myöhemmin tein aukkoja olkiin, johon laitoin erilaisia taimia kasvamaan.
Olkien maatuessa, muodostuu vuosien mittaan hyvinkin multava kohopenkki.

I then covered the soil with a thick layer of straw. Later, I made openings in the straw where I put different seedlings to grow. In this way, the weeds could not grow and the sun did not evaporate the moisture from the soil. In the summer when it is hot, the straw protects the microbes. Microbes will not work if the soil temperature rises above 35 degrees Celsius. Also, beneficial fungal mycelium grows in the straw, which in turn is in symbiosis with plants. The plants receive various trace elements from the mycelium, etc., and the mycelium receives sugar from the plant.
I always add straw if any weed grows through the straw. As the straw decomposes, a raised bed is formed over the years.
